Christmas for Lorie

Lorie had just celebrated her 50th birthday with her family when she learned that her cancer had returned and had now spread. For those who knew her, this news felt especially heartbreaking because Lorie lived her life with a kind of light that didn’t just brighten rooms, it changed people. She was the heart of her family, the steady, grounding presence who made ordinary days feel meaningful and holidays feel magical. Her laughter, her kindness, and her instinctive way of caring for others created a home where love was woven into every detail..

In early August 2025, after several rounds of treatment brought no improvement, Lorie and her husband, Steven, made the heartbreaking decision for her to enter hospice care at home. Knowing how deeply Lorie loved Christmas, the decorations, the lights, the joy she poured into every detail, Steven wanted to bring her that magic one more time. He decorated the exterior of their home early, hoping to give her comfort and a sense of the season she cherished most.

What began as a simple act of love between a husband and his terminally ill wife quickly became something far greater. Within days, neighbors noticed the Christmas lights glowing in August and began putting up decorations of their own. Word spread, and soon the entire community joined in, surrounding Lorie and her family with warmth, compassion, and Christmas spirit. Cards, ornaments, gifts, and heartfelt messages poured in. The love Lorie had always shown to her neighbors, friends, and community was now being returned to her tenfold.

As the celebration grew, Scott Swan of WTHR-TV learned about what was happening in Carmel, Indiana and shared the story with viewers across the state. It didn’t stop there, the story traveled nationwide, reaching more than a million people. Messages, donations, and well-wishes arrived from across the country, each one a testament to how deeply Lorie’s story touched others.

This is where Christmas for Lorie found its home, in a neighborhood, a community, and a movement of kindness. With the donations sent by so many caring individuals, Steven, Lorie family and close friends saw an opportunity to give back. Over Labor Day weekend (2025), the community was invited to celebrate Christmas with Lorie. Santa and his reindeer arrived, the Carmel Fire Department decorated a fire engine for the occasion, and families gathered for food, music, caroling, and joy. It was Christmas in the month of August, a celebration of love, faith, and the incredible impact one woman’s spirit could have on an entire community.

For Lorie, Christmas was where her spirit shined brightest. She had a gift for turning the season into something unforgettable, not through grand gestures, but through warmth, intention, and the joy she poured into every tradition. From the way she decorated the tree to the way she wrapped gifts with care, Christmas with Lorie felt like stepping into a world she created just for the people she loved.

When she passed, the season changed but her light didn’t. It became something to carry forward.

Christmas for Lorie grew directly out of the overwhelming love our family received as people came together to celebrate the life and spirit of an extraordinary woman.. It has become a living tradition that honors her by continuing the joy, kindness, and connection she brought to every holiday. Each day, we add new memories, new reflections, and new moments that keep her presence woven into the season.

Christmas for Lorie isn’t a memorial. It’s a celebration of the way she lived, the way she loved, and the way her spirit still guides the family she shaped. It grows each year with new photos, new stories, new traditions and new ornaments, all rooted in the legacy she left behind.

Lorie's story is not finished. It continues in every act of kindness, every moment of joy, and every Christmas moment that carries her light forward.
